Why Leicester Square Is a Pre-Theatre Dining Hotspot

Leicester Square sits at the heart of London’s West End, surrounded by more than forty theatres within a ten-minute walk. That means thousands of people need feeding before curtain up every night, and the area has responded with everything from quick pre-theatre menus to leisurely fine dining. The trick is knowing which spots handle a 5:30pm sitting without rushing you, and which are best saved for after the show.

Most theatres open their doors around 7pm for a 7:30pm curtain, so you want to be seated for dinner by 5:15pm at the latest. Book ahead for anything popular on a Friday or Saturday, and always mention you’re seeing a show — many kitchens adjust their pacing accordingly.

Classic Pre-Theatre Menus Around the Square

Several well-known restaurants in and around Leicester Square offer fixed-price pre-theatre menus designed for exactly this situation. Expect two or three courses served quickly but without feeling rushed.

Andrew Edmunds on Lexington Street is a Soho institution with a handwritten menu and candlelit tables. It’s a five-minute walk from the square and takes bookings, which matters on busy nights.

J. Sheekey near Covent Garden is the upmarket option if you want fish and seafood before a big show. The pre-theatre menu is excellent value compared to à la carte, and the service is famously efficient.

Balthazar on Russell Street offers a grand brasserie setting with a dedicated pre-theatre menu. It’s ideal for groups and handles tight timings well.

Flat Iron on Denmark Street keeps things simple with affordable steak and quick service. No bookings, so arrive early or expect a short wait.

Quick Bites If You’re Short on Time

Not every pre-show meal needs to be a three-course affair. If you’ve got 45 minutes, Leicester Square has plenty of fast options that still beat a chain burger.

Bao on Lexington Street serves pillowy Taiwanese buns and small plates. It’s walk-in only, but the turnover is fast.

Kanada-Ya on St Martin’s Lane does proper tonkotsu ramen in under an hour. Perfect on a cold evening before a long show.

Dishoom in Covent Garden is a longer walk but worth it for Bombay-style small plates. Book ahead or try the downstairs bar for quicker seating.

Yori near Leicester Square tube offers Korean BBQ and quick set meals. It’s less crowded than the bigger names and reliably fast.

Where to Go After the Curtain Falls

Once the show ends, usually around 10pm, the area stays lively. Many diners head for dessert, a nightcap, or something more substantial if they ate early.

Dining options around the square are plentiful, and many visitors pair a pre-theatre meal with a later stop at the casino hippodrome. It’s a familiar landmark for anyone who wants to extend the evening without travelling far.

For late food, Balans Soho Society on Old Compton Street serves until late, and Mildreds in Soho is a solid vegetarian choice if you’re not done for the night.

Practical Tips for Booking Before a Show

Book your table for 5pm or 5:15pm if the show starts at 7:30pm.
Mention the show when booking — many restaurants will pace your meal to get you out in time.
Check whether the pre-theatre menu is available on Saturdays; some places exclude weekends.
Allow 15 minutes to walk from the restaurant to your theatre, plus time for the loo and bar queue.
If you’re running late, call the restaurant. Most will hold your table for 15 minutes.

Choosing the Right Spot for Your Evening

The best pre-show meal in Leicester Square depends on your budget, your appetite, and how much time you’ve got. A leisurely dinner at J. Sheekey suits a special occasion, while a quick bowl of ramen at Kanada-Ya works when you’re cutting it fine. Either way, eating before the show beats queueing for interval ice cream, and it sets up the rest of your night in the West End.
